Chart Analysis: Tiktok Sparks off Border Breaking Action

August 3, 2020
Naamloos

TikTok challenges mean border breaking action, but not in a way the American president is currently afraid of…

The hugely popular TikTok app makes a dent in the Music Moves Europe Artist Chart. Now rock bands can’t showcase their talents on real stages, and most dance floors remain empty, the results of kids being creative at home become visible in the charts. Half of the eight new entries this month claim in their biographies victory through their popularity on the user-generated video content platform TikTok. As TikTok is a worldwide phenomenon, it easily crosses European borders

Also, British hiphop artist S1mba at #10 is the highest rising artist this month again, already played in twenty European countries. In just three months, S1mba managed to get into the top 10, helped by a TikTok challenge with some funny dance routines on his single Rover (Warner). He replicates the success of Ramz, another British rapper at the more poppy side of the UK grime scene, whose hit single Barking (Universal) enjoyed similar success on TikTok and is currently at #4.

Although the Music Moves Europe Artist Chart does not calculate TikTok content, successful TikTok videos drive streaming results for listeners who would like to hear the complete song instead of a short clip. And a combined streaming and TikTok success story makes a good story for radio pluggers to convince radio to play the song – a catchy track with a good hook works most of the times also on radio… Over the past year the ‘TikTok success’ -argument has become a catchphrase during the radio plugging process. There will be an impact on the music industry if American president Trump bans TikTok in America because of suspected data leaks to the Chinese government.

As mentioned, four of the eight new entries this month claim TikTok victory. The highest new entry at #78 comes from young Spanish reggaeton singer Juanfran. His singe Como Llora (DN7) took off via TikTok in South America first, and now is a huge streaming hit in Italy. British Youtuber and singer Niko B enters at #79 while his poppy hip-hop track Who’s That What’s That (Ministry Of Sound) makes inroads into Finland, Switzerland and Belgium via TikTok. And at #80, German language rapper with Turkish roots Pashanim finds success in other German-speaking countries Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg with his self-released Airwaves via TikTok. It’s the same story at #87 for French-language r’n’b singer Wejdene, whose Anissa (Caroline) is a success via TikTok in the French-speaking parts of Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

Other new entries are at #84 French-Guyanese rapper and actor Hatik at #84, whose Angela (Low Wood) takes off in the French-speaking countries and Poland. More melancholic rap at #95 comes from French artist Yuzmv. His Le Chemin 66/6 (Play Two) crosses over to Belgium. The Norwegian word  ‘sykepeierinnen’ means ’nurse’ and is a Covid-19 related hit for Norwegian act El Papi on Universal, crossing over to Sweden now. Finally, British DJ/producer Nathan Dawe made on Warner a new version of the 2000 hit Flowers by Sweet Female Attitude, which does well now in Belgium, Germany and Scandinavia.
