Introducing: Sarah Julia
Time to get to know our nominees a little better. Sarah Julia share songs that inspire them to create art and we chat with them about things (almost!) nobody knows about them... ;-) Can you keep a secret?
But before we head over to the interview, why don't you crank up some tunes to get into the vibe that is Sarah Julia? They've created a playlist of 15 songs that inspire them.
What was the first song you wrote about?
Well, the first song we ever wrote was a piano ballad when we were little. It was about our differences as humans and things we were curious about, like how other people celebrate Christmas, haha. But the first song we wrote for our project was 'Game of Pretend'. It was supposed to be on our first EP, but we could never quite capture the right feeling. When Julia gave it another go one night at 4 a.m., something finally clicked. Most of the anger had faded, but the sadness lingered, and that’s what you hear in the version that’s out in the world.
Name your biggest musical inspiration at the moment!
Like everyone right now, we’ve been loving the new Geese record. They’re not afraid to take risks, which makes it so inspiring and fun to listen to.
Craziest thing that happened on tour:
When we were on tour supporting Paris Paloma, they started this very fun game of hiding lemons in each other’s suitcases, bunks, bags, gear, basically everywhere they could think of. When we finally unpacked our suitcase, we noticed a strange dust-like substance on our clothes. It turned out to be one of the hidden lemons we hadn’t found yet… and it had gone moldy, haha.
Which song of your own means the most to you and why?
Currently, it’s ‘Daughters’. The song is about the fears that come with being a woman and what it means to live in a world that fails to keep us safe. We wrote it a couple of years ago, and unfortunately it still feels very relevant today. It’s painful to see how many women connect with it, both online and in the audience, yet there is something healing about it. Sharing that weight through the song makes us feel a little less heavy.
What did you want to be when you were little?
Sarah wanted to be a ballerina and Julia wanted to be in this Dutch girl group called K3, haha.
Artists people like if they'll also like your music:
Hopefully some artists we also love ourselves, like Phoebe Bridgers, Joni Mitchell and Adrianne Lenker.
What do people like to do if they like you?
We’re so lucky to have really creative listeners. We’ve seen people create tarot cards inspired by our songs, crochet our favorite animals, create beautiful drawings. It’s such an honor to get to see their art. Also, they keep asking us if we’ve seen Yellowjackets yet. So I assume they also love that series (that’s still high on our watchlist!)
What is something (almost) nobody knows about you?
Julia is really good at geography and can almost name every country in the world and point to where it is on a map.
What do you listen to if nobody is around?
Sarah: The Riddle by Nik Kershaw, though I actually listen to it even when people are around, because it’s such a banger.
Dream collab for your art or music:
We’d love to collaborate with an orchestra someday. There’s something magical about all those beautiful instruments breathing and moving as one. Our earliest musical memory is going to the philharmonic orchestra with our parents on Sundays, so working with an orchestra would feel like a full circle moment for us.
Leave a message here for your fans:
We’re so lucky to know you and to be on this journey together. Thank you for listening and sharing your stories with us. We can’t wait for what the future holds, it wouldn’t be the same without you <3
Lastly, give us a random inspirational quote!
This is a quote our mom lives by and taught us from a young age: you never fail, until you stop trying.
