yunè pinku: "I'm the best"
15 nominees. It's quite the number. How on EARTH are you going to know which artists to vote for, for the Public Choice Award? We've got you covered. In our 2 min read, you'll learn about their pets, favorite artists, funny stories and listen to their inspirations. Next up: yunè pinku.
What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Asha and I’m Malaysian-Irish, but grew up in London.
Tell us how you started making music.
I just began experimenting with soundscapes and gradually started creating indiepop songs.
Tell us a little secret (almost) nobody knows about you.
They’re not secrets if I don’t keep ‘em.
Open question: tell us something you want to share about yourself.
I’m the best :-)
Tell us the last song you’ve listened to, and tell us something you like about that song.
The last song I listened to was ‘Pets’ by Porno for Pyros, and I just love the lyrics and guitar.
What's the best gig you've ever been to?
There’s been so many, but Alex G and Wolf Alice were great!
Which song of your own is the most significant to you and why?
They kind of come in waves, depending on the day, but I’ve always liked 'Fai Fighter', especially to play live!
What album (or albums) have shaped you the most as an artist and generally as a person? What impact did they have on you?
I think it’s been a culmination of a few, there were definitely some Madonna albums like ‘Confessions on the Dancefloor’ but I think Jeff Buckley’s ‘Grace’ was probably the first album I used to walk around to with headphones on. I guess it was the first album that stopped me in my tracks because his voice and the guitar riffs were so unusual.
Name a song lyric that has inspired you and tell us why.
"No, no, no it won’t happen to us, we’ve lived our lives and basically we’ve been good men" - Sinead O’Connor.
The lyrics of ‘Drink Before the War’ are relevant, especially now in sight of the wars going on around the world. The ignorance that because it’s not on your doorstep, it’ll never be.
Is there a song people wouldn't expect you to like?
‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ by Joy Division is one of my favorite songs, but I guess because it’s so different to the kind of stuff I make, you wouldn’t expect it!
Any new music you are listening to right now?
I’m just browsing through some 90s stuff I hadn’t looked into before like Fiona Apple, some older Björk and then some Shane MacGowan as an ode to his passing.
Who is your dream collab with and why?
It changes every day honestly, because once second I’ll be like “I should be a rock star”, and the others I'm like “I should make an experimental pop album!” But I think Wolf Alice are probably my teenage dream collab and still would be.
You've created a playlist for us, to give us a peek into your inspirations. Tell us about it!
These are some songs I refer back to for production or energy, and also love to walk around and listen to in daily life.
